This short story written by Edgar Allen Poe, is a Gothic novel. This means that the story is dark, and the location remote. There are many images that help show that the location is remote and dark. For example, "dark and intricate passages." This means that the passage ways to the house were dark, as well as the roads in the house. Fissure is another great example. The house was fissure, which means that it was about to break. This is imaginable, because in a such secluded place, nothing is stable. "Minute fungi overspread the whole exterior", is describing the outside structure of the house. Due to the fact that it is so remote, the house is starting to age.
Finally, the last example would be "the crumbling condition of individual stones." This also describes remoteness and darkness because the stones of the house are all about to break. It is obvious that nobody is taking care of the house. These all add to Gothic settings because all these adjectives describe the state of darkness. In Gothic literature, everything is old, untouched, and decaying. Darkness in Gothic literature describes decaying and remoteness. All these examples correspond with Gothic literature.

"Vaclav Havel, former Czech president who helped bring down communism, dies at 75"
This article was founded in the LA Times, and as written by the Associative Press.Vaclav Havel, the former president of Czechoslovakia died at the age of seventy five. He was a great playwriter, and with his talent he combined poltics to end communism in Czech Republic. He died Sunday morning at his vacation home, and was the first democratically elected president in Czech. He helped his country breakup peacefully with Slovakia in1993. Even out of office, he did a lot. He was part of the "newEurope", and he stood up for U.S. when it launched its attack on Iraq in 2003. He was also credited with laying the groundwork that brought Czech Repiblic into the twenty seven nation bloc.
It is sad that such a respected man died at such a young age. He did so much for his country, and he is barely even credited for it. He should be a well respected man, because his excellence helped his country become a democratic nation. If it was not for him, Czech Republic would be in a disastrous situation. I think he will recieve a military burial, and that many famous and important political leaders will be present at his funeral. It was also said, that he was a heavy smoker and that is why he passed away. He was not able to breath any longer. A death because of smoking is always sad, especially to a political leader.

"Gunman fires on motorists, others at Hollywood intersection"
This article was found in the LA Times, and was written by Sam Quinones, Richard Winton and Hailey Branson-Potts.A man wearing a white tank top was walking in the famous intersection of Vine and Sunset on a Friday morning. He was holding a pistol in his right hand, and also has a knife equipped with him too. He was shooting at random vehicles as they were passing by. Sadly, as a man in a Mercedes was driving on Sunset, he was shot in his jaw. He was rushed to the hospital and is in critical condition. Many did not believe the situation, and others were braking their cars immediately so they would escape the bullets of the armed man. The suspect was a twenty-six year old man but his name has not been revealed yet. He was shot twice by two different officers, and laid in the middle of the street for several hours.
This news is unbelievable because I never thought such terrible acts could be committed. An innocent man driving down Sunset was shot! We are all very lucky that this man was shot down before he could have done more harm to the people. I chose this article because I have never heard of such a thing happen in Hollywood. I could say that I am terrified because the event occurred only minutes away from our school. Vine is a street i regularly pass because I eat Chipotle there with my friends. Now, every time I pass that street it will remind me of this scary man that went on a shooting rampage.

"The Raven"
This piece of literature is written by Edgar Allen Poe. "The Raven" is a great piece of literature that fits in with the idea of being a Gothic poem. First of all, Poe is a Gothic author and writes about dark stories. A few examples as to why this poem is Gothic are the key words raven, December, night, and dark. Also, the entire story is dark, and revolved around a mental man and a dark raven. Gothic literature means that everything occurs in the "dark". Even the plot of the story is dark.
Saying that, the poem already starts scary when there is a tapping on the door. At first he thinks it is just the wind but then the creepy noise comes again. Therefor it means it is dark and scary. Throughout the novel, the black raven comes about and it starts talking to the man. This is called Anthropomorphism which could also be considered Gothic because these are dark thoughts that are unrealistic. In a Gothic poem, characters are in psychological and physical torment. This occurs in the poem, because the main character is psychologically ruined. He hears and sees things that are not there. It is as if he is disturbed. Finally, in Gothic literature a supernatural or other worldly element is present. In this case, it would be the raven that asked for the disturbed man's name.

"Favorite Part of the Novel"
My favorite part of the novel was in chapter twelve. This is the part when Mr.Dimmesdale goes to the spot where Hester had to stand in front of the public. Dimmesdale goes here late at night. The platform was very gloomy. It had been many years since Hester had been publicly ashamed. The platform was weather stained, and lost its color because of the many guilty people that had gone on it throughout the years. He went up and stood there silently. Nobody would have seen him because the entire town was asleep. He could have stood there all night but the only problem would have been that he would have been cold. However, it did not go as planned. Dimmesdale felt as though the entire world was collapsing on top of him. He yelled on top of his lungs! The governor's sister opened the light and looked outside but thought that it was just the witches. Dimmesdale felt as though the entire world is collapsing on him.
I personally liked this part of the story, because it shows what Dimmesdale is going through during these hard times. The details used in this chapter are extremely descriptive, and no other chapter is described like this. I personally think that if Dimmesdale did not yell at the top of his lungs that night, things would have been much worse. Also, what amazes me is the towns people! They are so gullible, and they believe that those noises were the witches. What foolish people. Altogether, this was a very informative chapter, and definitely my favorite one.

"NBA players, owners reach tentative agreement to end lockout"
This article was founded in the LA Times. This article was written on November 26 by Mike Bresnahan. The NBA was inactive for 149 days. The owners did not agree with the players for quite some time but now the NBA is finally back for its sixty-sixth season. The agreement was held in a meeting at New York. The commissioner David Stern said that the season will officially start on Christmas Day. The plans for NBA are that there will be sixty six games this year and the regular season will end in April. The NBA finals will end sometime at the end of June. Now, all they are waiting for is the 450 players that need to agree with the terms. The season is finally back.
Im so glad that the NBA season is back into action. It was a long four and a half months of no basketball. We could finally watch our teams back in their uniforms. However, as much as I love basketball, I do not believe that the players should be paid that much money. I am glad that the owners decided to not play this season in the beginning because the players did not deserve it. Now, everyone learned their lessons and this will be an example for the future of NBA. It is a clear statement that the players do not have authority over the owners. However, despite the player's faults, I am definitely excited for the new season to start.

Chillingworth vs. Dimmsdale
Chillingworth and Dimmesdale ae both major sinners, in different ways. Dimmsedale, commited adultry but nobody knows that it was with Hester Prynne. Chillingworth on the other hand, was in a way trying to kill Dimmsdale. Therefore, I have to side with Dimmesdale. Although his actions are not correct at all, you could tell that he is sorry for his actions. He is not livng a normal life and that is because he is hiding the adultry secret from the entire society. What makes things even worse is that he is the minister of the community and if his secret is released, things will not go right for him. Chillingworth's actions are wrong because even though he is extremely angry, does not mean that he should try to kill someone. That makes him an even bigger sinner.
And thus, whie standing on the scaffold, in this vain show of expiatio, Mr. Dimmesdale was overcome with a great horror or mind, as if the universe were gazing at the scarlet token on his naked breast, right over his heart(Hawthorne 123). This explains all of Mr. Dimmesdale's feelings. He is ashamed of his actions, and knows that what he did will haunt him for the rest of his life. However, I feel sympathy towards him because he understands his actions were not right. Admitting to your sinns and trying to fix them always makes you a better and more respected individual. At the end, I decided to side with Dimmsdale because he is trying to make things right, even though he cannot speak about his actions.

"Paterno Is Finished at Penn State, and President Is Out"
This article was founded in the LA Times. It was written by Mark Viera. Joe Paterno, has been coaching over forty years, and has the most wins in college footbal history, as well as the most bowl wins. On Wednesday, he was fired by Penn State. Graham B. Spanier, was one of the longest serving and highest paid presidents of all time. They were fired because they had a failure to act in the sexual abuse scandal involving a prominent former assistant coach. The Board of Trustees was ashamed by the decision they had to make, but it had to be done. Paterno said that he wanted to retire at the end of the season, but he was released before the end of the season.
This is a very embarrassing article, because a major issue like sexual assault on college coaches is very inappropriate. I feel disgusted about this topic because it is not right for a serious topic like this to be kept silent for so many years. As good of a coach Paterno was, he deserved to be fired. He had a great career, but after this his college years and reputation definitely went down the drain. All the hard work for nothing. If I was the president of the school, I would also feel disgusted for such an action. I hope an action like this never happens again, especially in the sports world. This is unacceptable, and Paterno is as guilty as the one who committed it because he knew about it and never opened his mouth.

The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This book takes place during the romantic era. There are many examples that fit with the American Romantic era. The first example could be found in chapter three. "The penalty therefore is death. But in their great mercy and tenderness of heart, they have doomed Mistress Prynne to stand only at a space of three hours on the platform of pillory, and then and therefore, for the remainder of her natural life, to wear a mark of shame upon her blossom"( Hawthorne 57). This is when the author lets Hester know that she is forever shamed. She is branded and has to wear the letter A on her. This is a great example of puritan times during the American Romantic era. Hester is shunned from society forever, and will live a shameful life.
The second example is when Hawthorne describes the prison door. "Like all that pertained to crime, it seemed never to have known a youthful era"(Hawthorne 43). This is a great example, because it describes how scary, gloomy, and dark. By doing this, Hawthorne opens the path for rest of the story with a great description. These examples show us the Gothic times during the romantic era.

Pride, One of the Seven Deadly Sins
None of the deadly sins suit me except for pride. Having pride is very good because it shows that your are satisfied and confident of yourself. However, too much of something is never good. I could easily say that sometimes I have a lot of pride. Its not that i boast about it, I just want people to look at me and say that I have accomplished something good. I could say that even though I might have a little pride, my good points in life will cover that mistake. Lately however, I have noticed that my pride is not overwhelming. I have learned how to control myself. I have learned a lot from this. Now, as I get older, I realize that everything I do is for the good of myself and nobody else. I should keep that pride in myself and make myself proud, not other people.
If I had to walk around with a P around me like Hester Prynne, I really would not mind it. I certainly do not believe that pride is one of the seven deadly sins.It is true that I would not like to be branded with letters on me because I am not a product. If you have a little of pride does not mean you are doing anything wrong. However, something like adultery is very bad, and makes you look like a really bad person. My conclusion is that whatever you do, be proud of it because your are the only person who will be facing those consequences later on.

"The Custom House"
"The Custom House" is written by Nathaniel Hawthorne who is also the author of Scarlet Letter. This story takes place in a Custom House in the 1800s during colonial times. Nathaniel works at a Custom House in Salem Massachusetts. This was a major sea port during the 1600s but gradually the ships stopped coming. Nathaniel writes in a very descriptive way, and tells us how he loved to write. His parents got mad at him so they made him find a new job. He was related to the President, so he got a good job in the Custom House. However, his job was very boring so he usually wandered around. One day as he was doing this, he laid his eyes upon a manuscript that later became the Scarlet Letter. Sadly, he was laid off his job because his family member was no longer the President.
"The Custom House" was a great start to the Scarlett Latter that we will be reading soon. You always want to know what meaning and where your piece of literature originated from. Nathaniel Hawthorne looks like a man that uses extreme amounts of detail in his works. I had an idea of what a Custom House was, but now that he described it for me, it made it much easier for me to understand. I have a feeling that Scarlet Letter will be a good book because I already like the type o literature that Hawthorne is presenting to us.

"from Letter From Birmingham City Jail"
Martin Luther King Jr. wrote this letter on a newspaper from prison on April 16, 1963. He had no place to write so he wrote on the outlines of the newspaper. He aimed the letter for the writers of the newspaper article. Martin Luther King Jr, was a Civil Rights activist who wanted freedom for his people. He explains how the police beat them up at their own will. They used brutality in the form of dogs, they would not feed the people, and they would curse at them. MLK explains how if he was not in prison right now he would have approached everyone and talked to them in peace. His tone in this letter is calm, encouraging, and emotional.
I think that MLK is a very wise man who seeks freedom for his people in the right way. He does not want any violence or any killings. All he wants to do is talk and help people understand that the color of your skin does not matter. I found this letter extremely interesting, and I wish there were many other activists like him out there. His letter should point out to everyone that it does not matter who you are, you could still make a difference.

"2 Policemen in Egypt get seven years for killing activist"
This article was in the Los Angeles Times. The author of this article is Amro Hassan. In 2010, Khaled Said was brutally beat to death in an Internet cafe. He was beat because he posted up a video of corrupt officers distributing drugs and money from confiscated criminals. Now, a year later those two police officers Sgt. Awad Suleiman and patrolman Mahmoud Salah Mahmoud were found guilty for manslaughter in the coastal region of Alexandria. They will face seven years behind the bars. He was an activist-blogger, and it was after his efforts that they went against the reign of Mubarak.
Police brutality is becoming more and more common, and it is a world wide topic now. I think that an end should come to this quickly. Innocent people who are just doing their jobs are dieing for no absolute reason. We should all make effort to stopping this madness. This usually happens more in the Middle East, because they do not have freedom of speech or press like we do. However, the good news is that these dictators are slowly being brought down. Now finally these writers could have their freedom in publishing whatever they want about the corrupt government. An end should come now, and we could help bring that end.

"I Have A Dream"
This speech, "I Have A Dream" was written by Martin Luther King Jr. on August 28, 1963 on the footsteps of the Lincoln Memorial. His speech was aimed for everyone who was present, and for everyone in the world. His was advocating civil rights, and during his speech he was expressing angry emotional words. He was demanding freedom for the African Americans. He believed it was about time that they receive their freedom. In his speech, he uses ethos and pathos. For the ethos, he states that the right thing to do is give freedom to the blacks. They should be treated equally as normal people. For the pathos, he explains how he wants his daughters to be judged by their characters and well beings rather than the color of their skins. His speech is so powerful that it is still remembered today by the entire world. It still shakes people and tells them not to be racist.
I think that Gokors and Michael's presentation was extremely detailed. Even though I knew about this speech, I did not exactly know everything about it. Now, I could proudly say that I am educated about King's speech. It is a really touching speech, that uses a lot of emotion and strong adjectives describing his view about the racism. I respect his ideas, and his speech because everyone should always respect each other. I also believe that his speech will forever be remembered, and is probably the best speech of its time.

"Kadafi killed against a backdrop of NATO support"
This article was written by Henry Chu and David S. Cloud. It was also founded in Los Angeles Times. Today, marked the death of Moammar Kadafi. He died by NATO's aerial assault on Libya. It was said that the bombing were done by a U.N. mandate to protect its civilians. It is said that this operation has been going on for seven months, and on some occasions they have been close to killing him. Finally, he was brought down by a French jet pilot and an American Predator drone aimed at his convey in Surt. NATO officials said that they were not aiming for him, they just saw a large convoy that was leading and unexpected path. Kadafi survived the attack, but was captured by rebels who surely shot him to his death in minutes or even seconds. Now that he is dead, NATO forces will leave Libya within days.
I think that Kadafi deserved this harsh treatment. During his reign, he did nothing to better the lives of his people. All he did was kill innocent civilians. If i were a rebel, I would have done the same. After months and years on trying to get rid of him, they finally achieved it. I do not think killing people is a correct thing to do but after this event Libya will slowly start to move towards the better. I also think that the rebels will finally stop their fights and everything will go back to normal. The sad thing is that no operation ever gets done without the help of U.S.

"Straw Into Gold"
"A Straw Into Gold" is written by Sandra Cisneros. She is a modern author who traveled the world just like Benjamin Franklin. The occasion of her story is about her life. Her main audience is the people reading it. Her purpose for writing this short story was to show her success. She is a Mexican-American writer who was very much influenced by her family and travel. She suc school in France, and never knew how to cook Mexican food.
In her autobiography, she feels as if she creates allusions. She feels as if she is being asked to do the impossible. One small example of her success was when she did not know how to make tortillas. She put in the effort and succeeded. However, she has her bad sides. She goes against her families wills and leaves the house. She realized she did not want to be in a home with all boys, and she is much different from the rest of her family. The ironic part is that she does wonder off, she becomes a very successful woman. Also, she makes a very strong connection with her mother and father. She states that she is hard willed and intelligent like her mother, but very emotional like her father. She also gained the love of travel from her father. I think she is a very educated woman, and that all woman in the world should be adventurous and enthusiastic like her. Her autobiography gave us a small glimp as to how wonderful her life is as a writer and traveler.

My Five Virtues
Every person has virtues that they need to work on throughout there life. I for one, have five specific virtues that I need to work on. Those five virtues are Order, Courage, self- discipline, tolerance, and confidence. My first virtue order is very important because I am now old enough to organize my life without the help of anyone. When, I succeed with this virtue, I will realize that my life will become much easier.
My second virtue would be courage. I think that courage is very important in everyone's life. Every individual needs courage in their life to help them become the best person they could possibly be. I want to be able to stand up for myself, as well show people that I do not have a weak mind.
Self- discipline is an extremely important virtue. This virtue is the one that keeps you alive throughout your life. It guides you, and takes you through the prosperous paths and not the paths of hell. I want to be able to control myself in very tight situations. I need to learn to keep my emotions and anger anchored, in order to balance myself throughout life.
Tolerane is a very important vitue because it helps you to become an even better individual. I must learn to respect my surroundings even more than I used to. I have to learn and appreciate my surroundings without trying to change anything. I should have a positive attitude towards peoples opinions and their practices.
The final and most important virtue of all would be confidence. This virtue definately is the building blocks of a very successful life. Confidence does not mean you need to be cocky or even boast about yourself. This just means that you should always walk with you head held up high, so that no individual ever realizes your weak points. Confidence, will definately pave you way to success.
The virtue I know I will work on for two days is Order. I will organize myself even more for two days, just to challenge myself even more. If I set these standards, I will realize that my life will gradualy become more organized and easier.

"Benjamin Frankilin Autobiography"
Benjamin Franklin was born on 1706. He started writing about his life in 1723. However, he did not have enough time to finsh the autobiography. He started writing his autobiography when he was seventeen years old. His main purpose was to inform us, and his objective was to obtain moral perfection. Franklins project was moral perfection, and he sad it came with thirteen virtues. He states how people define things differently from others.
His thirteen virtues included temperance, silence, order, resolution, furgality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranqulity, chasity, and humility. These thirteen virtues ar very powerful, and if completed correctly, a true man is formed. Benjamin talks about his plan on how to achieve these goals. He will progress himself week by week. This is a very logical and reasonable progression. I thin Franklins autobiography is very respected, because it is just an unbelieavable story as well as philosphy that barely anybody could every achieve and write. After reading his virtues, i thought to myself about how much i have to change in my life and achieve to be a great man like Benjamin Franklin.

" Speech in the Virginia Convention"
Patrick Henry is the speaker of this speech, and he is presenting his speech during 1775 and 1776. His speech was powerful and it was aimed for the members of the convention. Henry urged armed resistance to England. His speech had a very powerful impact on the colonists and audience. This speech had a revolutionary spirit and his powerful words led to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Henry said," Give me liberty or give me death!"
People can argue as to why Patrick Henry gave this speech. This speech was given to inform his audience, as well as the future audience which is us. He delivered this speech to show the people that they need to stand up for their rights. On his behalf, this shows patriotism because he showed his presence as an important political leader. As for the tone, we could argue that it is serious and demanding because he is literally telling his people that they have no choice but to stand up for their rights and defend as well as unite their colonies. This speech is important because it shows how Patrick Henry was determined to give up his life for freedom.

"Mission Update"
This piece of literature is also considered to be a blog. Steve Squyres is the speaker of this blog and he wrote this blog to inform us readers as well as the world. He wanted to tell everyone that Opportunity the rover landed on Victoria Crater on September 28, 2006. This date is significant because just like every other scientific exploration, this was one that would go down to the history books. After decades of research a rover landed on Mars and is showing scientists what life is like on a different planet. For Steve, and his fellow colleagues this was a great step forward!
Steves main purpose was writing this blog was to inform his readers. He wanted to talk about their accomplishments, but that was not all. He wanted to mention what was next in their agenda. He informs us that their next location would be Cape Verde. They will go there to take more pictures to explore and discover new signs of life. They chose Cape Verde because during this time the sun would still be facing Mars and communication will be possible. The purpose is the most important SOAPTS aspect because not only does he explain to the world their achievement but also tells us that this is not the end, and more exploration will take place very soon. Another great SOAPTS aspect would be the tone, which is informative and relates to the fact that Steve is informing his readers with the recent accomplishments.

"Taliban Time Blast to 9/11"
This article was founded in the Wall Street Journal, and was written by Maria Abi- Habib and Habib Khan Totakhil. The Talibans had to "celebrate" their great victory of September 11's tenth anniversary by denonating a very powerful car bomb near a vital military base in Afghanistan. The attack was near the capital of Kabul and it left five Afghan civilians dead as well as seventy-seven American troops injured. The blow was so powerful that buildings 300 yards from the explosion were brought down just like the twin towers and well as windows shattered two miles from the explosion! Taliban, took responsibility for the attack. They stated that they will continue to guide attacks like these until they prove to the world that they were not responsible for the attacks that took place in 9/11. All of the injured American troops were taken under medical attention and luckily, none of them were seriously injured. A day of mourning turned into more sadness for many American citizens as they saw their fellow soldiers being injured.
The article is important in significant ways. At first, it proves to us that terrorism will never come to an end, especially not in the Middle East. The fighting will never stop, and gradually it will worsen until the United States puts an endpoint to it. To many people this bombing could have been very important because there was some irony to it. As everyone knows, in the same district of Wardak, where about one month ago thirty American soldiers were gunned down from their aircraft. This is important because it shows us how day by day we lose our fellow colleagues due to war. I also thought this was important because i wanted to show the terror that goes in every day, and i want us to all take actions and do our best to put an end to terrorism.

"A Journey Through Texas"
This short story takes place during the year 1528. The main speaker of this passage is Cabeza de Vaca who takes journeys through Indian villages. The purpose for his expedition is in search of new lands for the king and queen of Spain. Vaca is trying to find gold to further continue his expeditions to the new lands. We are the audience of this short story because the story is directly presented to us. This story is in first person and it engages us and helps us connect with the characters.
There are three tones to this passage; informative, descriptive, and anger. It is informative because it informs the reader of not only what is going on in the story, but also the lives the people underwent in these harsh times. It also includes the descriptive tone, which describes to us the paths Vaca took and the actions he had to undergo to fight for his survival. Finally, anger is a main tone to this short story. Vaca shows his anger when he is trying to catch the attention of the Indians to show them that he is the one in power. This passage is not only showing exploration but also knowledge. Vaca is trying to obtain knowledge from the Indians to further learn about life away from Spain and pass that knowledge on to other Indian villages.

"Rising fuel exports keep U.S. gasoline prices from falling"
The author of this newspaper article is Ronald D. White, and this article is from the Los Angeles Times. Oil prices have definitely fallen, but U.S. motorists are not benefiting because the U.S. continues to expand its exports and reduce supplies available domestically. These results could be seen in the Energy Department because every week they post surveys of service stations all around the U.S. This time last year, gas was 90.3 cents cheaper. Tom Kloza is the chief oil analyst for the Oil Price Information Service. He said that in the last ten weeks, the energy department has been exporting more refined products cargoes than it is importing. Most, if not all the product that is being exported is diesel. Its main customers are Central and South America. To close his statements, Kloza reported that this is something good for our country in terms of reducing the deficit, but it is a major headache for the people living in the U.S.
In my opinion, this is a very gruesome step in our economy. Although it is proven that countries that export more than they import usually have more durable economies. However, I believe that this is the exact opposite for our country. We should use our natural resources such as gas and not distribute it to other countries. After all, our country is in an atrocious economic situation. The U.S. Energy Department should lower the gas prices, and this is done by not selling gas to other countries. With cheaper gas brings forth more men and woman driving their vehicles to work. This procedure speeds up our economic growth and will help to lead us to a healthier and more prosperous country. This article is important because it could wake up the people of America and show them what the down sides of exporting our fuel does to our economy. Hopefully, citizens will take matters into their own hands and stop the madness being created by the Energy Department.

My favorite book!
Throughout my three years in high school, the book that i really enjoyed reading was Fahrenheit 451 by the author Ray Bradbury. I found this book really interesting in multiple ways. The main character Guy Montag, is a firefighter. Instead of taking out fires, he starts them by burning books in a futuristic American society. As he starts to meet a young girl, she changes his views towards life. I find this interesting because the author uses great details to show how much trouble Montag went through just to make things right.
As he tries to make things right, he gets the bad guys to come after him and make his life more difficult. However his choices are very respectful. He thinks about siding with the wrong people but his good will helps him make the correct choices and restore freedom to the people. The main reason as to why i like this story s because Guy does what is right and that is very respectable. If i was him i would do what is right because that is the only way anyone can restore freedom to their people. This is why Fahrenheit 451 is my favorite book.
